As we are about to begin a new school year at Central High School, we are proud to highlight one of the impactful initiatives to emerge from our community: Afrocentric Magazine.

Launched in 2020 amidst global challenges, Afrocentric was created as a vital platform to empower Black students and amplify their voices, art, and perspectives. This magazine has become a beacon of creativity and expression, offering a space where Black students can proudly share their stories and talents.

A special thank you goes out to the 228th graduating class for their generous support of Afrocentric. Your contributions have been instrumental in helping this magazine thrive and make a meaningful impact. Your philanthropy has enabled us to foster a space where Black voices are not only heard but celebrated.

Here’s a glimpse into how Afrocentric has impacted our students:

Tavian D., 284, shares, “Afrocentric has become more than just a club for me; it’s a place that brings purpose to my life. I’ve connected with other dedicated individuals and witnessed the creativity and perseverance of our members, who worked hard to produce this year’s magazine despite various challenges. My favorite part of Afrocentric is the diverse array of ideas and creative expressions, from writing to art. I’m excited to contribute even more next year and help the club continue to thrive.”

Isa M., 284, reflects on their journey, saying, “Afrocentric matters to me because it showcases my talents and celebrates Black-centered creativity. Receiving the first edition of Afrocentric as a freshman left a lasting impression on me. Now, as a rising senior, being part of the club and contributing to the magazine, has been a fulfilling experience. It’s wonderful to be part of a platform that highlights Black creators and their work.”

Bryce G., 285, emphasizes, “Afrocentric is a safe space where I can express myself as a young Black man and develop my skills in editing and art. Before joining, I struggled to find a space where my experiences as a Black student were valued. Afrocentric is a wonderful club, and a great place for anyone to share their art, music, and experiences freely without prejudice or fear of being judged.

Aman Akmel, 283, the magazine director, adds, “Leading Afrocentric has been a significant part of my high school experience. It’s not just about the magazine; it’s about the connections I’ve made with people and the platform it provides for Black voices. This role has allowed me to build friendships, collaborate with supportive faculty, and leave a mark on our school’s literary history. It’s been an invaluable experience.”

To the 228th class and all who have supported Afrocentric, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your contributions are making a difference and inspiring others to support the vibrant and creative voices of our students.

Let’s continue to uplift and celebrate the incredible talent within our Central High community!
