In honor of Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of the young women of Central High School who are currently making history. As we were recently reminded during the Olympic Games, women have been making history in athletics for decades.

That same spirit of excellence can be seen right here at Central.

Since women first began attending Central in 1983, they have shaped the school’s legacy in countless ways. This season’s standout performances are a powerful reminder that the tradition continues.

Our Track and Field team saw an incredible performance from Breeya C (285) who set a new school record in the 800m with a time of 2:15.

“Being an athlete at central is a feeling that can’t be replicated. My friends and my teachers show me so much love and support and I appreciate them all for that. Being a young woman accomplishing so many big things is one of the greatest feelings of them all, because I feel like I’m influencing other young girls to participate in sports, specifically track, that are dominated by boys and men. In the future, I hope to continue to athletic career at the college of my choice, and if my path allows it, I want to take it to the furthest extent and become a professional athlete and runner. I hope to leave a mark on the world.” – Breeya Conwell

In the pool, the girls’ swim team has had a remarkable season, breaking both league and district records. Ava B (286), set the Public League record in the 100m Backstroke with a time of 58.74, while Jannah R. (286) claimed the Public League record in the 500m Freestyle with a time of 5:12.98. The 400m Freestyle Relay team of Jannah R., Neomi R.(286), Nancy M.(286), and Ava B. also set a new District record with a time of 3:40.94.  (Contrary to what the upperclassman may try to tell incoming students, the fifth floor pool still does not exist.)

“Swimming has taught me dedication and focus. Not only is it my passion, but I have had to work hard to stay regimented to become successful.” – Neomi Rodriguez

We are also proud to celebrate two seniors who will continue their athletic and academic careers at the collegiate level. Delilah F. (285) has committed to the University of Rhode Island for rowing, and Emily K. (285) will attend Elizabethtown College to play soccer.

Getting the chance to be a part of the girls soccer team has been one of my most significant  experiences at Central. It has brought me an amazing group of friends and teammates who stood by each other through our wins and losses. Central soccer has allowed me to lead, mentor, and work alongside a strong group of women. It taught me how to balance school, soccer, and my social life. Being a part of the team has shown me how hard work pays off and taught me how to be the best teammate I could be.  These lessons have helped me along my journey to getting the opportunity to play collegiate soccer at Elizabethtown College this coming fall!

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate not only these impressive achievements, but the generations of Central women who continue to raise the bar.
