Central’s winning football team huddled with coaches for words of encouragement after shaking hands with Kensington Friday.

Central’s varsity football team stayed undefeated for 2016 and kept its hopes for a post-season title alive Friday afternoon with a decisive 50-0 win over Kensington High School in the opening round of the city playoffs.

The Lancers were firmly in control after just one quarter with a 22-to-nil lead. By the half  the score was 43-0 and Coach Rich Drayton (246) began resting many of his starters to keep them healthy for round II. Among them were Blake Schwartz (276), who punched in four touchdowns on the ground, and fellow senior Gerritt Roscioli, who added two through the air.

Ellen and Ken Roscioli have traveled to all of their son’s games this season as he started at quarterback for the first time. In the second half of Friday’s game they actually got to enjoy the winners high with him along the sidelines as he ceded quarterback duties to Central’s future.

“He has loved football since he was a little kid,” said Gerritt’s mom, wearing a big smile.

Dad Ken added: “He loves this team. It’s a good group of kids who are playing well together.”

Coach Drayton, in his eighth season leading the Lancers, said he was pleased that the young men stuck to their level of play, even though they were facing a team with only one win on the season.

Next, Central will face the winner of the MLK-Lincoln matchup that was set for Friday evening.
