Two Central graduates from separate classes, through their family’s new foundation, this month added $65,000 to Central’s Alumni Scholarship fund, enabling more gifted students to pursue higher education.

The two siblings, who wish to remain anonymous, bestowed the gift through the Vert Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in the Philadelphia area. The four-year scholarship will be targeted toward students who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. Because of the siblings’ interest, preference will be shown to students either with a musical interest, athletic interest or community-service interest. Preference will also be shown to first-generation college attendees.

Explaining the motivation behind the gift, one of the siblings, a lawyer, said, “Both of us had really positive experiences at Central. I think it helped shape who we are not just in our professional careers but as citizens of Philadelphia and the area.”

The lawyer continued: “We recognize the financial hardship that college is, while also recognizing that Central affords the opportunity for students to be able to go to the college that they choose because of the excellent academics and extracurriculars that it offers…If we can be of help to a student to be able to attend the college that they want to and eliminate some of the financial difficulties we would like to be able to do that.”
