Central’s landscape is set to get some long-needed TLC next month thanks to Comcast, a member of the 254 and lots of volunteers.

Comcast Cares Day, set for Saturday April 30 this year,  brings together Comcast employees, their families, friends and community partners on hundreds of volunteer projects annually.

Last year more than 100,000 volunteers improved about 900 parks, schools, beaches, senior centers and other community sites, Comcast says.

Thanks to Kristina Chang (254), who works in the procurement group at Comcast, Central is going to get a sprucing-up this year.

“I’ve been leading or co-leading Cares Day projects for the last several years,” said Ms. Chang. “Central has been on my mind for many years but when you think of schools in need, Central is somewhat privileged. We have a strong school staff, alumni, parent association when you compare it to other schools in Philadelphia. Others have a lot more need  and so we singled out other schools in the past.

“But as an alumni I just came upon my 20th-year anniversary and joined the board a year or two ago, and I felt it was time; time to do something a little bit more. And given my past, my tenure at Comcast, my past experiences leading other Comcast Cares Day projects, it was an easy ask.”

So Ms. Chang worked with Central Vice President Theresa Harrington. Among the projects they came up with for the day’s effort:

Volunteers will also help pickup trash on the school property.

While Comcast will provide supplies, Ms. Chang will ask people who are willing and able to please bring rakes, bush pruners and tree-branch pruners.

The day will begin at 8 a.m. with check-in, breakfast and T-shirt handout for the 200 needed volunteers. Work is set to go from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m.
